ABOUT NIT SRINAGAR
National Institute of
Technology Srinagar (NIT Srinagar) is
situated at the banks of the world famous Dal lake, with the world famous
Hazratbal Shrine adjacent to it in the North. It is one of the premier
Educational Institutes in the Northern Regions of India. It was established in
1960 and has been one of the eighteenth Regional Engineering Colleges sponsored
by the Govt. of India during the 2nd plan. The Institute acquired the
status of National Institute of Technology with deemed to be University status
during August, 2003 and attained full autonomy in its Academics with the
approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council of
Technical Education (AICTE) and the Government of India. On August 15th 2007 it
became an Institute of National
Importance.
Besides running BTech programmes in Civil
Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Chemical Engineering, the institute
also offers MTech Programmes in various super-specializations like Water
Resources Engineering, Structural Engineering, Communication and Information
Technology, Mechanical Systems Design etc. Large number of students are
registered for MPhil and PhD programmes every year in both engineering as well
as science departments. Right from its inception NIT Srinagar has been actively
involved with Research and Development activities. Admission
to NITs is through the All India Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
The institute
has one of the best Technical Library in J&K state. It subscribes to most of the
leading journals and has huge collection of books in engineering and science
streams. It has an Industry Interaction Cell established in 1989. NIT Srinagar
is a residential institute with all the important facilities and amenities
within the campus. There are very good hostels for both boys and girls in the
campus premises. All students and most faculty live on campus, in students
hostels and staff quarters. Various departments, administrative buildings and
library have been networked. Networking of all hostels is currently in process.

Civil Engineering Department
National Institute of Technology,
Srinagar (then REC Srinagar) was established
in 1960 and the Civil Engineering Department is part of the institute
since its inception. The Department has grown over the years and is now
recognized as one of the major engineering departments in the country.
The department has developed strong
links with the building and construction industry, both within and
outside the country. Besides high quality teaching and instruction at
both UG and PG levels, the Department is actively involved in basic and
applied research and consultancy and provides high quality technical
advisory support through various R&D projects and consultancy to various
organizations. The Department of Civil Engineering with its multifaceted
faculty continues to maintain and cultivate its strong links with the
infrastructural industry and academic and research institutions both
within and outside the country.
The department has
strong faculty who have obtained PhDs from Leading Indian and foreign
institutions. Expertise is available in Structural Engineering,
Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resources
Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Engineering Geology. For
management purpose, the department is divided into three divisions
namely Structural Engineering Division, Geotechnical and Transportation
Engineering Division and Water Resources and Environmental Engineering
Division.

Location and Map
The National Institute of
Technology is about 08 km away from the Tourist Reception Centre and 09
km from the city centre. It is well connected with most parts of the
city by a dependable road transport service. Srinagar airport and the nearest railway
station (Jammu Tawi) are located about 20 km and 300 km away from the
institute campus respectively.
Airways:
Srinagar
airport is 14 km from the city centre. Private taxis/tata-sumos/cars and
Jammu & Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (J&KSRTC) buses operate
between the airport and the city.
Road Ways:
National Highway
1-A connecting Srinagar with Jammu is a good, all-weather road with
several sharp inclines and hairpin bends. The famous Jawahar Tunnel that
connects Jammu with the Kashmir Valley
across the Pir Panjal range falls en route. All kinds of vehicles like,
Super deluxe/A-class/B-class buses (11 hrs), mini-buses (8 hrs), Taxis,
Cars, Tata Sumos (6 hrs) etc. are readily available for the journey.
Railways: The nearest railway station for
Srinagar
is Jammu Tawi (305 kms) where trains arrive from almost all parts of India.
